Kumbaya, the brand name for machine-stitched ready-to-wear garments, home linen and accessories made by women from one of the most remote, backward and poor regions of India. Kumbaya is one of the womens empowerment programs of Samaj Pragati Sahayog (SPS), one of Indias largest grass-roots initiatives for water and livelihood security (www.samprag.org). Located in the tribal drylands of Bagli Tehsil, Dewas district, Madhya Pradesh since 1995, Kumbaya empowers women by creating livelihoods through the dynamic skill of garment fabrication.
The unique significance of Kumbaya is that it is located in a predominantly agrarian region where there have been no traditional marketable crafts. Most of these tribal women had never stitched a garment before. Today over 700 women in 60 villages have learnt stitching. Kumbaya guarantees work and a market to producers for 300 days a year and makes a range of products designed to market specifications and international trends. These include Indian and western casual wear, duvets, patchwork cushion covers, table and bed linen, curtains, wall hangings, different types of bags and rucksacks.
